MAD’s work has made it 8 times more likely for a child born in poverty to move above the empowerment line by age 28, giving them and their families a real chance at a stable, dignified future.

Jithin-quote.png

We imagine a future where no child remains trapped in poverty simply because they were born into it. A future where every child has a caring mentor, a strong community, and the deep connections they need to thrive.

At MAD, we’re building that future — one where local communities rise with compassion, where progress replaces the current stagnation, and where children break free from generational poverty in their own lifetime. This is our vision: a caring ecosystem that powers progress, one connection at a time.”

Meet Ashwath
Kethavath

MAD VOLUNTEER,
FROM CHENNAI
ashwath-kethavath.jpg

This past week reminded me why I love being part of this movement. Among the many students I work with, one stands out. When I first met him, he barely spoke. He constantly second-guessed his abilities. I wanted him to believe in himself as much as I believed in him. He answered only when asked and was always unsure if he was right. But I noticed he was always listening, quietly absorbing everything.

Instead of pushing him to speak more, I focused on building trust. I shared my own stories, asked about his interests, and made sure he knew I was there for him. Slowly, he started opening up. Our classes became something we both looked forward to. We were not just covering the syllabus, we were enjoying the process.

Outside academics, he was a completely different person. He loved music. He wrote and sang songs effortlessly, and even beatboxed. In that space, there was no hesitation—only joy and self-expression. Encouraging him to share this side of himself helped him realise his potential beyond textbooks. But academically, self-doubt still lingered. “What if I’m wrong?” was a recurring fear. I made it a habit to remind him that mistakes are part of learning—that being wrong doesn’t mean failure.
Over time, he started trusting himself more, began asking questions, and even started helping others. Slowly, he is learning to bring the same confidence he has in music into his academics. And the best part is that he looks up to me as a mentor. That means the world to me.

MAD IN A NUTSHELL

Make A Difference (MAD) is an award-winning NGO founded in 2006 by Jithin Nedumala. MAD works at the intersection of human development, community organizing, and technology to end generational poverty in India. Through its flagship initiative, the Progression Mentoring Program, MAD delivers an 18-year-long intervention for vulnerable children in need of care and protection—starting at age 10 and continuing until age 28.

The volunteer based intervention supports children through every major life milestone—emotional and academic development, higher education, job placements, and even marriage and parenting. The community-powered model relies on mobilizing passionate young leaders as Community Organisers, to ensures high-touch, age-appropriate, and scalable mentoring that helps children break the cycle of poverty permanently.
